When halo first came out, it completely innovated the console FPS genre, launched the xbox to new heights and perfected the controls of a FPS game on a dual analog gamepad. Though many titles did come before it that gained acclaim as console FPSs(Goldeneye and Perfect dark comes to mind) halo is what really launched the genre and innovated console FPS gaming and launched it to the mainstream. Now the FPS throne is shared by pcs and consoles(though PC shooters are better) and halo 1 was a massive force behind this. Now the RTS genre has been sloppy and mediocre on consoles and many titles have come(starcraft64, C%26C3) but none managed to take perfect it and make it console friendly. Halo wars could do that and break new ground in RTS gaming(just like the first one) as it is made by ensemble(age of empires) a highly acclaimed RTS dev studio. The game could make RTS n00b friendly and launch it to mainstream audiences and could take another genre of gaming still identified with a PC and take console RTS gaming to the forefront of game audiences(and have CRTS tournaments and competitions). Disscus....P.S.: This thread is only for disscussion of this game and the impact it could have, so fanboys stay clear.Could halo wars break new grounds?
I highly, highly doubt it. The guys behind this game, are the same guys behind the mistake that was Age of Empires III. I wouldn't expect much.Could halo wars break new grounds?
I think it will help break new ground, but I honestly think it will be some time before we see a developer create a console rts that completly defines the genre on home consoles. This is a step in the right direction, but these are only the first steps towards a genre defining game.
[QUOTE=''elbow2k'']I highly, highly doubt it. The guys behind this game, are the same guys behind the mistake that was Age of Empires III. it doesnt have to be good, its halo so, 1mil sold in first week confirmed
Yes and no. For Halo Wars to be a successful (at least in terms of reviews) game it has to do something new in order to make RTS gameplay more console-oriented, otherwise it will be plastered with comments of ''NEEDS MOAR KEYBOARD!!!!!!'' But at the same time the only way to reach that point is to grossly simplify RTS gameplay due to the lack of hotkeys; it is simply not possible to re-create the frantic pace of a game like Company of Heroes or World in Conflict with a gamepad (and I say that as someone who greatly enjoyed the 360 version of C%26C 3). So while Halo Wars will likely break new ground in terms of being the most high-profile RTS on consoles, it likely won't do anything of note within the genre.
this game will break new grounds when i slam it to the floor out of anger...im sitting on the fence for this one
Doubtful. Why would halo start breaking new ground now?
I think it`ll be hard to make the Halo:Combat Evolved lightning strike again and breath new life in the franchise. Until I get some good new info, Halo Wars is still well under my radar for this year. I think it will get someware in the AA range.
What you have to understand is that the people who are incharge of Ensamble Studio are not the same ones of Age of Empire 2 and Age of Mythology, the creator of those two franchises left the studio, infact you are looking at the studio that made AoE3, which was kind of a dissapointement. Finally RTS games are much more keyboard and mouse focused than FPS games and you can't have any ''auto-aim'' Can you do RTS games on a console? Sure, but just don't expect them to be the same ones as on the PC.
Halo Wars could be the most innovative game ever and it would still be looked down upon and bashed just because it has Halo in it.Halo Wars gets AAA - ''They bought into the hype!'' ''It's because it has Halo!''
Could it do something new? Sure Will it do something new? Probably not...

Because Ensemble is known for their groundbreaking RTS games right? Especially since they've been going downhill! This downhill motion gives them momentum.
Oh FYI, SARCASM
I think being Halo - It better break new ground; I'm counting on it ! Just the birds eye view of a Halo battle field in action does break new ground on a console ( not counting Forge :) ) and IF done right could very well be a huge hit with the 360 gamers as my hopes are high though - it surely is a We Shall See kinda thing.

Also this is a thread about how will it imppact, not how much it will sell, which it will as it has the halo name attached, which is like nokia or playstaion, sell n brand name, not quality.
No it won't. It'll be a Command and Conquer game with a Halo mod on it.
Meh, C%26C3 on consoles wasn't mediocre in any aspect other than the unit limit system, and EA wouldn't support it (due to stubborn MS). That was the only problem with it.
Halo Wars from what we've seen doesn't look like it'll do anything new or revolutionary for console RTS.

Halo was in no way innovative, but it was still awesome. It didn't do anything that hadn't been already done by other FPS titles, but what it did it did well. (Except friendly A.I)Halo Wars, I think, will be much of the same. A conventional RTS in all respects, but adequate at the least. I have pretty good expectations for this game. Mainly because I used to love playing Age of Empires II.
